Lasso tool The lasso tool in Photoshop acts on the active layer of an image and is used to trace the edges of a selection by clicking and dragging. I'll use the Lasso tool to draw a free-form boundary around a selected item inside a picture. It will enable me to soften the edges of my selection or apply a feathering effect. The lasso group, like other of Photoshop's tools, provides a lot of choices, modifications, and quick-key shortcuts that will allow me to get things exactly right. But I have to be careful since Photoshop will close the loop with a straight line if I don't end near where you started. I find it intriguing that the Magnetic Lasso tool works by identifying the areas of the highest contrast in an image and then snapping to the edge between those areas, as if the edge had a magnetic pull.
